Fast and Flexible Sortation Systems

Efficiently Sort Goods for Streamlined Operations

When it comes to supply chain operations, speed is essential. Customers expect fast deliveries, and next-day delivery options are becoming increasingly common. On top of this, manufacturers and distributors need to be able to adapt quickly to changes in demand to maximise profit.

Sortation systems are ideal if you’re looking for a simple yet effective solution to improve throughput. They can help you quickly assemble orders by sorting goods based on predetermined criteria. Typically, goods are sorted by destination or courier service.

A sorter consists of a long train of carrier modules, which are pulled by a conventional drive motor to create linear movement. The carrier modules can be triggered independently to eject goods at right angles onto adjacent product chutes.

Automating time-consuming and labour-intensive processes can minimise throughput times. Goods can then be promptly prepared for delivery, without any risk of order errors.

Sortation System Applications

Picking and Packing

Order picking and packing can be very labour-intensive, especially when staff need to travel long distances to gather items. Manual picking and packing strategies can be both time-consuming and costly, as multiple staff members are required.

Automated sortation systems can significantly reduce these challenges by handling most of the transportation of goods. This allows operations to rely on fewer workers while ensuring faster and more accurate order processing.

By organising goods in advance, sorters streamline picking and packing tasks. Employees can focus on preparing orders, and in turn, this improves accuracy and productivity.

Receiving Goods

Sorting solutions can streamline the processing of incoming goods, enhancing both speed and process visibility. Equipped with unit scanners, sorters can track goods' movements and relay this data to warehouse software, improving inventory accuracy and process visibility.

By implementing sorting in the goods receipt area, items can be quickly categorised for storage. The increase in throughput can also benefit returns management and cross-docking operations, where speed is essential.

Shipping

As companies grow, manufacturing warehouses often need to cope with growing distribution destinations. On the other hand, distribution centres need to contend with growing store numbers and home deliveries.

This escalation can complicate the order preparation process. Sortation systems simplify shipping by sorting goods based on their destination or assigned courier, making logistics more efficient and organised.

Scalable Sorting at flaconi

We implemented a packet conveying and sorting system for online beauty retailer flaconi. The highlight of the new logistics centre is the GEBHARDT SpeedSorter® loop. It organises goods using a warehouse control system (WCS) and PLC control. We installed the new system within just nine months.

Thanks to our help flaconi can now efficiently and flexibly manage customer orders across a 28,000m² facility. The GEBHARDT SpeedSorter® loop is also designed to be flexible so that flaconi can scale operations in the future.
